| Probably to achieve higher mercury vapour pressure, which is beneficial for increased red content. When arc gap is reduced voltage drops. To bring that back up to normal levels more mercury has to be added and red ratio will increase due to selective broadening of the sodium spectrum only on the red side but not the blue.
