Why do freezer lights go dim more? « on: July 09, 2026, 01:53:51 PM » Author: Emersyn
I've noticed that fluorescent lights in freezers/refrigerators often go dim. Is that just the coldness keeping the mercury from vaporizing, or are they like actually mercury starved?

The mercury, generally in form of a solid amalgam (depends on the specific bulb), fails to vaporize well due to the cold environment. This leads to only a mild glow by a little mercury vapor and the starting gases, and it takes a long time for it to warm up. Fluorescents of any kind generally don't do too well in cold temps below 10°C (50°F).

The weird thing I've seen before a small fluorescent lamp get put in a freezer (where it would fail to vaporize), but then when it came back out, the mercury never revaporized and the lamp was pink afterwards!

Yeah modern fluorescents have a tendency to go mercury-starved early in their lifespan when used in a freezer.  It was never an issue with the old full-mercury lamps.

These days freezer is a good place for LEDs!

Because if used in a freezer the bulb is cold forcing the bulb to act “mercury starved”. LEDs are honestly better in places like refrigerators and freezers.
