What is the most common post top to find in MV in your area? « on: August 20, 2026, 10:06:17 PM » Author: Goodlighting2000
Most post tops in my area are HPS or LED, but in your area, are MV versions common?

If so, what is the most common post top in your area that you find in mercury vapor?

Mercury hasn't been common in my area in 30+ years, but I can think of a few makes of post-tops that I've seen in MV most of the time. The Holophane Square-Postop, ITT Series 247, McGraw-Edison Styleking, McGraw-Edison Lawn-Glo, and even the Steber Lighting Parkmaster.

Anything GE for the most part from what I've seen over here, mainly the PM and PMA series. The only over MV post tops I've seen in person was the Lawn-Glo.

I’ve seen several GE Town & Country fixtures in MV too, both 100W and 175W. Not sure if they’re there anymore since it’s been a while, but I’ve once been to a neighborhood full of 175W versions (glowing brightly with coated lamps), this was like 20 years ago though, so they might’ve since been replaced with LED or HPS. I’ve seen ITT/AEL 247’s, GE PM/PMA series, and some others in MV.

I’ve never seen a Cooper Lexington/Traditionaire post top in mercury vapor. I’ve seen a few in MH though, still uncommon compared to the once ubiquitous HPS versions. I’ve also seen globe fixtures in MV. I don’t think I’ve seen many MV acorns. Most acorns I see run MH, HPS, or incandescent. I don’t think I’ve seen an acorn light in MV (those that I suspected were MV just had coated MH lamps installed). I recall calling to a subdivision to look at the lights that was lit by Cooper Traditionaire in 175W MV (it was at night but the light they put out was the 4000K glow of deluxe white mercury lamps). Some banks seemed to have used MH versions.

I think I’ve actually seen Cooper Traditionaire post tops in MV, I think I have (but only the ones with the refractive lens). I’ve never seen the FCO variants or the decorative variants in MV. I’ve never seen an MV Lexington. Older Traditionaire post tops were sold under the McGraw Edison name. The Lexington is Cooper’s answer to the GE town & country and AE 247, and I believe it came out later, and I’ve only seen them in HPS.

I’ve seen more MV than I estimated, I’ve seen plenty of MV cobras, NEMAS, and post tops (mainly the 4-sided colonial style lanterns or the UFO style post tops).

I’ve seen more acorns in incandescent (running corn cob lamps) than in mercury vapor nowadays.

GE Town&Country
McGraw-Edison Lawn-Glo
Thomas&Betts/ITT 247

There are about 200+ Lawn-Glos still in service in a private condo development by me, most 100W MV with a few retrofitted to 100W HPS or replaced with 50W AEL 247s.

I’ve seen Lawn-Glos before. I’ve seen some used on people’s front yard. The incandescent versions seem more common but I’ve seen MV and even HPS variants.

100W HPS is not equivalent to 100W MV, but the brightness is like between a 175W and a 250W MV lamp. The Lawn-Glo is the ONLY 4-sided colonial post top lantern I’ve seen that’s common in incandescent.

I've seen some parks with what appears to be 175w MV Powerlite Twistpaks so those are probably the most common in my area.
