Article about mercury vapor sports lighter installation in 1972 « on: September 30, 2026, 05:32:14 PM » Author: jcs97
Here's some clippings of a newspaper article about installation of mercury vapor ballfield lights at a hugh school football field in September 1972. My dad was a student there at the time, and remembers this.

Although the article doesn't say, I'm guessing these used 1,000W mercury vapor bulbs overdriven at 1,500W. I've read catalogs that talk about how this was a practice at the time. I don't know what the difference between the 60 foot "standards" and 100 ft "towers" are. Anyone recognize the fixture make or model from the picture?

1972 would probably still be in the time when 1000w MV lamps driven at 1500w would be used, especially for smaller fields. Light standard is another term for a light pole, it seemed to be more commonly used in the past.

I found some pictures that clearly show the 100ft and 60ft towers both elected, with the 100ft towers closer to the center.

If I'm not mistaken, 1,500W MV bulbs were never made; just 1,000W bulbs overdriven at 1,500W.

The light fixture shown in the image is a GE made sports lighter too. It's got the same indoor high bay ballast that was used on their HM1000 high mast fixture.
I think these are called the Powr-Spot flood light.
