Israel followed, and plans to ban the incandescent lamp next year.

I commented on that page, as follows (translated) :

The power saving lamps are not!!!! "greener" to the environment in all cases.

Besides the electricity the lamp takes, matter also the pollution of manufacture, transportation, and disposal of the lamp (even if it is being recycled, not 100% of the material is reclaimed)

For the manufacture of incandescent lamp are required : Glass, argon gas, filament.

For the manufacture of power saving lamp are required : Glass, argon and krypton gasses, filaments, toxic phosphors!, mercury! (the amalgam lamps are lies - they contain mercury just as any other fluorescent lamp), toxic materials in the manufacture of electronic components and circuits!, plastic of type which is not being recycled!.

Recycling a power saving lamp (which is not available in Israel) the electronic circuit and the phosphor are disposed of and not recycled, and make pollution.

In certain applications only, in which the power saving lamp will have long lifetime, the electricity saving does offset the increased production and recycling pollution of the lamp itself.

In other uses : Staircases, small and sealed fixtures, cold places in winter, wet places, the power saving lamp will die sooner than the incandescent it is meant to replace.

In this condition, the pollution from manufacturing the power saving lamp and the materials it is made of is polluting more than generating the "extra" electricity.

Moving to power saving lamps will in many cases also require replacing infrastructures, light fixtures, disassembly of light fixtures which are cast into concrete ceilings, and more pollution from all that.

As we advance to green energy (and especially those who have high capacity solar system at home), the pollution from the manufacture of the lamp becomes the significant, or only, part of the pollution of the environment originating from the lamp.

I suggest keeping the incandescent in all those places where the power saving lamp is incompatible. TO prolong the life of the incandescent (up to 10 years and more), it can be left connected to a dimmer which is not set to the maximum, or other electrical devices which can be installed by electrician. All this will cause more! pollution then the normal incandescent lamp that holds 1000 hours, and still be greener than the "green" lamp.

Of course, linear fluorescents and metal halide etc. lamps are greener than both the incandescent and the power saving lamp, and are the best option for places where they are applicable, even at the cost of replacing a light fixture.

לייצור נורת ליבון נדרשים: זכוכית, גז ארגון, חוט להט.

לייצור נורה חסכונית נדרשים : זכוכית, גז ארגון וגז קריפטון, חוטי להט, חומרים זרחניים רעילים!, כספית! (הנורות אמלגם הן חרטא - הן מכילות כספית נוזלית בדיוק כמו כל יתר נורות הפלורסצנט), חומרים רעילים בייצור רכיבים ולוחות אלקטרוניים!, פלסטיק מסוג שאינו ממוחזר!.

בזריקת נורה חסכונית למחזור (שעדיין אינו קיים בישראל), המעגל האלקטרוני והזרחן נזרקים ואינם ממוחזרים, ויוצרים זיהום.

בשימושים מסוימים בלבד, שבהם לנורה החסכונית יהיה אורך חיים ארוך, החיסכון בחשמל מכסה על הזיהום המוגבר בייצור או מיחזור הנורה עצמה

בשימושים אחרים : חדר מדרגות, גוף תאורה קטן וסגור, מקומות קרים בחורף, מקומות רטובים, הנורה החסכונית תחזיק מעמד זמן קצר יותר מנורת הליבון שאותה היא אמורה להחליף.

במצב הזה, הזיהום מייצור הנורה החסכונית ומהחומרים שמהם היא בנויה מזהם יותר מהפקת החשמל ה "מיותר".

מעבר לנורות חסכוניות יחייב בהרבה מקרים גם החלפת תשתיות, גופי תאורה, פירוק גופי תאורה ישנים שיצוקים לתוך תקרות בטון, וזיהום נוסף מכל אלה.

ככל שמתקדמים לאנרגיות ירוקות (ובמיוחד אלה שיש ברשותם מערכת סולארית ביתית בקיבולת גבוהה) הזיהום מייצור הנורה הופך לחלק המשמעותי, או היחיד, מהזיהום הכללי לאיכות הסביבה שנוצר מהנורה.

אני ממליץ להמשיך להשתמש בנורות ליבון במקומות בהם הנורה החסכונית לא מתאימה. בכדי להאריך את אורך חיי נורת הליבון (עד 10 שנים ויותר), ניתן להשאיר אותה מחוברת לדימר שאינו מופעל עד הסוף, או רכיבים חשמליים אחרים שניתן להתקין באמצעות חשמלאי. כל זה יגרום לזיהום גדול יותר! בהשוואה לנורת היבון הרגילה שמחזיקה 1000 שעות, ועדיין יהיה "ירוק" יותר מהנורה ה "ירוקה".

כמובן שנורות פלורסצנט ישרות ונורות מטאל וכו' ירוקות יותר גם מנורת הליבון וגם מהנורה החסכונית, ולכן הן האופציה העדיפה ביותר איפה שהן מתאימות, גם במחיר של החלפת גוף תאורה.

It is a must to return the fixtures with PL lamps to the stores! The PL lamps have instant full light output compared to CFLs, have higher efficiency (Also in a magnetic ballast) have longer life in case of magnetic ballast and a 2-pin lamp, and have also very long life in magnetic, even if they are frequently turned on.
Also, recycling of discharge lamps, must be started in Israel, before the ban of the incandescents will be started. Otherwise, our land and water will be polluted with mercury.
First the recycling of these lamps should be started, and then the banning.
