Obsessive Compulsive about lighting « on: February 03, 2012, 02:13:04 AM » Author: RyanF40T12
When it comes to lighting, fluorescent in particular, I am obsessive compulsive, and know many of you are as well  ;D  Amazing how lamps and fixtures can capture the mind and eye of a person.  I have a method/technique I use in all the buildings I service to ensure they are getting the best lighting possible, and I take it very personally.  What on earth is wrong with me?  ;D ;D ;D  You know you have it bad when you spend 2 hours at one building, pulling out many of the lamps that were installed when the building was built, and moving them over to another building and putting them in those fixtures, and using the old lamps that were in those fixtures and move them back to the first building and putting them in there.  The maintenance group for the buildings I work on had decided to go to all cool white tubes back around 2003/2004 so anything replaced was done so with cool white, and no longer warm white.  This drove me up a wall because cool white gives me a headache and is too crisp.  So I did everything possible to extend the life of the existing warm white bulbs and would move good warm white bulbs to the buildings I was in the most, and then retrofit the other buildings in all cool white, the ones I did not need to go into all that much.  Well they have now decided to go back to the 3000k warm white Sylvania for the T-8 equipped buildings.  I'm trying to EoL all the old Philips 700 series tubes that I've been moving around for the past few years before I put in the better more reliable Sylvania 3000k's.  Figure I can save some money that way, so now I am going to gather up all the 700 series Philips from the buildings I migrated them to and put them in the fixtures that get the most use.  Because Philips T8 tubes have such crappy and weak filaments, I should have them all at EoL within the next year or two :D  Oh the things I do.  I also have a batch of GE F40T8s which I am trying to run to EoL as quickly as I can because of how much they suck as they get older.  They loose light output big time and are super dim when old and starting up cold.  That would be my biggest complaint about the GE T8s.  Oh the fun I have on Friday and Saturday nights.  I seriously need to get a life.  And that may be happening soon, I've met an awesome gal who does not seem to mind my OCD/ADD!

The more you hate the LED movement, the stronger it becomes.

At least have some fun.... In theater class (i was electronics student, but well the theater guys were keeping on calling me to setup/fix the stage lighting, speakers, etc. eventually it progressed into building props, controlling the dimmer and mixer in the show, and appearing on stage - earning me the title Pikachu)

So i made many props.... That included lighting. Lightning simulator (Switch Start fixtures on a short duty cycle timer - few flashes and back off + CD player in sync for the sound effects), strobe (some more FL's + relays + 555 timer), mystical aura (HPS with red curtains + blacklight), ghost house (merc blacklight, EOL vintage T12's in appropriate fixture), starry night (tiny LEDs hanging on wires), and just colored ambient in the pathway (extension cables, FL's in fixtures right behind the edge lighting into the plantation, wrapped in plastic wrap of different colors)

Friendship with the janitor was usefull too - access to unlimited supply of EOL lamps of any type ever used at school, new lamps and starters..... Though i did have to bring some extension cables and fixtures, as well as a computer running a better OS, from home)
