Do you prefer HPS or LPS? (please don't say  :mv::a_mv:, because I know EVERYONE likes them!) I like them too, 2nd favorite light. So, I like LPS more, better contrast, less glare, and more efficient. I do know, the light pollution could be an issue.

I never seen proper LPS lamp, but i do about imagine what they are (i can get monochromatic color from an HPS by severely underpowering it, so i guess it is the same color just brighter)

I do like HPS as bright light source, when it is used to light the area up to high brightness (i think none of the sodium lamps can be suitable for low brightness lighting, only white light for them)

I am trying to imagine the aura of LPS lit area, once again to high brightness. I think it is far too different than HPS - there are places that would go well with HPS but not LPS, and the other way around. I imagine that LPS light would give a "frozen" aura, so suitable for places without anything that can break it (such as large running stream of water), and HPS for places with "live" aura

Another point is - I do like cycling HPS too. There are places where it (along with the audible clicking ignitors on silent nights) is just part of the aura of it. A red LPS is another aura, once again not the same and not for the same places

Depend what is the application.
LPS is more efficient for raw lumen output, but due to it's size it is impossible to utilize it in an accurate beam pattern. Therefore not so good for "normal" street lights, does not reach that far (the efficacy based on the weakest lit place on the road become very poor with larger pole spacing).
But good on places not needing tight beam control, where the monochromatic light is not a minus

HPS create less total lumens, but they are packed within small rod, so quite easy to form an accurate beam pattern, so rather far reaching, yet still  efficient illumination (the efficacy for the weakest lit point remain high even with larger pole spacing - with the usual "4xheight" it become more efficient than the LPS). At least partial color vision. So from the two way better for street lighting.

@ Medved: This is about a personal preference, not a matter of practicality/efficacy. So... do you like  :hps: or  :a_sox:?

I like LPS because it is a light source I don't see every day and the bulbs look cool during startup.

My preference goes with what work better. So on streets I do like the HPS more...

LPS. I spent 13 years trying to get my hands on one and a ballast to drive it. I like the color of the light because it reminds me of sunrise or sunset. I use an 18 watt in my office.

I quite like LPS now although I hated the sight of the orange glow when entire cities were lit almost exclusively by them, plus the very dingy lifeless appearance they give to greenery. They were even used in parks and along wooded footpaths making it hard to see anything either side of the path, not encouraging when walking alone at night. HPS was a compromise in this respect even though I didn't particularly like the colour of some of them, coated lamps seemed to be better in that respect (whiter). At least you could see some colour once your eyes adjusted.

I would like to get one SOX fitting (or bulb/ballast to put in a bulkhead) for the entry as LPS will be ideal. I would prefer a 10W version but doubt I'll be able to get one now. I have no intention of ever installing HPS though I may add one to my collection.

ETA:
I bought a few SOX bulbs and then couldn't resist a couple of SON bulbs as well when I saw some going cheap .. the SON bulb is getting regular use in my loft uplighter during early evenings, then I change it for an MB or occasionally an MBF later on when it's darker outside.

Say NO to DICTATORSHIP in the form of bulb/tube/ballast bans !!
