600ma preheat choke? « on: December 03, 2012, 12:55:18 PM » Author: toomanybulbs
i know i can parallel 2 common pl chokes to get this but is a 600ma unit made?
i remember a sylvania plant light used one but no info about it.
friend has a desk lamp that uses a 28w 4 fingers pl.
lightning blasted the electronic ballast then he removed and lost it.
its a panasonic lamp.i even have spare tubes to fit it if he wants 5000k.

You mean for 120V mains and <70V arc?
If I remember well, the 35W HPS should be around 0.55A for 70V arc, so with disconnected ignitor (just keep the Neutral wires not connected) it should work...

For 230V (or 240V) 50Hz the F58T8 is 0.65A.

And 50W MV is exactly 600mA, but for 95V arc. And it would be hard to obtain in the US...

yes 120vac.
problen is limited space to install.i will get the lamp soon and know more.
its a sentimental item from the 80's and not a chance of finding parts.so this one will be "retro"
the lamp runs fine on one 300ma choke.just a bit touchy to start.2 in paralell will do the trick.

Here we have 26W PL-D and it works on the same choke as 18W T8/20W T12. Draws about 340mA i think

Now a PL-D thats double that current is really unusual (PL HO ?), are you sure you are not just overdriving an ordinary PL ?

Maybe a 40-50W hps choke will be ok - the hps takes mpre current (more towards 1A i think) but if the PL in question have way higher arc v than the hps then it will have lower current on the same choke - so if you try it then try carefully and measure to not damage the lamp with way higher curent

 hello Toomanybulbs

I did experment with my 50 watt MV ballast in preheat circuit for 58 watt lamps it work out like a treat
   no problem runing the lamp.

ok If recall right I think Vossloh Swchabe made a 58 watt ballast for 120 volts with auto transformer set up. and it fits in a narrow ballast channel, as it EU made ballast.

No LED gadgets, spins too slowly.  Gotta  love preheat and MV. let the lights keep my meter spinning.

funkybulb : you recall correctly about Vossloh Schwabe, however you might have a hard time finding one as I think they are getting out of the 120 V magnetic ballasts. If you do find one, I would be interested to know the supplier.

Eltam (in Israel, ballasts same as Vossloh Scwabe - identical designs) make chokes for 120v up to 20w T12 or so. But they dont make 120v autotransformers

Ash: I think that Vossloh Scwabe actually does makes 120V autotransformers, as I have seen here pictures of VS preheat ballast for 20W T12, with 4 screw terminals instead of two, which is a clear sign of an autotransformer. However, they have significantly different design than the american made autotransformers, and they looks more the european chokes, but only slightly larger and with 4 terminals instead of two.
