Why I like LEDs on top of other lighting tech?
LEDs = Upgrade 95% of the applications. (That is if you avoid eBay's LEDs).

LED brainwash? No, people uses them cuz they work well for them.

Westinghouse made a 75,000 watt lamp! Also, I've seen the 50,000 watt lamp made by GE in person. The filament is HUGE, the actual diameter is quarter of an inch thick!

I read somewhere about 100kW incandescent, i think it was German, but i'm not sure. It was some sort of sun-simulating lamp from before 20's.

... only 870A - you need quite thick wires to drive this one!

If we exclude the multi-megawatt carbon-arc sky trackers that were made during WWII,...

Why to exclude, do you have some pictures of them? They should be interesting to know more about...

This monster is cooled with an inner water flow (yes, inside the burner) and is used for (surprisingly) solar simulation.
Here is some info about it's little brother of only 100 kW: http://www.pre.ethz.ch/facilities/vortec/
and about the 300 kW model: http://www.ornl.gov/info/ornlreview/v35_3_02/lamp.shtml

I think the second is not used for solar simulation, but material processing...

What were in detail the most powerful searchlights?

Various websites suggest than common models run at 110 V / 200 A, thus 22 kW. Wikipedia vaguely mentions bigger searchlights with 200 cm diameter, powered by a 120 kW generator, which suggests a power consumption of the arc somewhere between 50 and 100 kW. Such figures have also been mentioned in a book from the fifties for fixtures in large movie studios. Such beasts were necessary for the first colour film stocks with a sensitivity of a mere ISO 16/13°.
