What do it means that they are banning the sale or manufacture of MV ballasts effective Jan 1, 2008? Do they mean that there won't be anymore new US made MV ballasts?

Why I like LEDs on top of other lighting tech? LEDs = Upgrade 95% of the applications. (That is if you avoid eBay's LEDs).
LED brainwash? No, people uses them cuz they work well for them.

Can I still get the lamps or ballasts? What will happen if I install a MV fixture in my backyard in 2008? (Currently doesn't have one.)

It means no more mercury ballasts or fixtures can be made or imported but it says nothing about ones that already exist.
You can install a mercury vapor fixture that already exists unless you live in certain states where it's illegal but 90% of the time they don't enforce those laws anyway.

I wish the lawmakers did their homeworks before making something a law. Whoever passed the bill must gotten a F in chemistry otherwise they would know that "Hg" means mercury.
What might happen if they decide to enforce the law at my house? Jail? Fine?

Lawmakers don't necessarily care about facts, they think that their opinions matter more than actually doing the research. They want to ban mercury vapor just because it's not quite as efficient as high pressure sodium or metal halide, if that's the only reason they want to ban mercury vapor that's pathetic. A 175 watt mercury vapor light is 65% more efficient than an incandescent floodlight.
In states like Arizona and New Mexico, their laws are very strict, it's illegal to even repair or relamp fixtures. If you got caught installing a mercury vapor fixture that's illegal, that's only a misdemeanor which means you would have to pay a fine. Either way, the Dark Sky Association is trying to get us any way they can.

Dark sky LOVES Metal Halide, which has a LOT more mercury than Mercury Vapor! But yet, Dark Sky uses the "mercury" excuse to ban them!!!

Fluoros, CFLs, MHs, and HPS all have mercury in them. Even middle schoolers knows what "Hg" means. How do they recruit folks to work at DSA?? If they don't want and mercury to be used then they should use LPS or incandescents lamps.

I bet Dark Sky uses metal halide fixtures in their parking lot which contain the most mercury so they definitely have NO room to talk.

Why can't they stop wasting money on banning lamps and ballasts instead of using that money to fund renewable energy projects?

They won't listen to anyone, the Dark Sky Association people already have their minds made up about mercury vapor.

I'm with you guys on this one. I'm a fan of mercury vapor lights and am annoyed by this new bill. It just won't be the same without the pretty blue green hue of MV lights around so hopefully there is still a way to save MV lights whether we have to write letters or start a petition or something.

The ban is stupid yes but here's the catch: 175-1000 watt standard metal halide ballasts are electrically basically the same as mercs. The ballasts are designed to provide a slightly higher OCV to strike the MH lamps, the only difference. So you can order new MH ballasts to operate your mercs! I have seen lots of mercury lamps operated on MH ballasts in commerical lighting.

This makes me feel slightly better about this law even though it still irritates me. I don't think it affects the sales of mercury vapor bulbs though so we should still see those readily available. If not, I may have to stock up. And if worse comes to worse, there's always ebay.
