Hi all I was just looking at the Woolworths thread again and it came back to me that here in the UK Woolworths or woollys as it was known had an electrical product range under the name Winfield. They sold plugs in all the sizes used in the UK up to the early 1980s is 2 5 15 and 13 amp but !most interesting was there lightbulbs because they contained a Ballotini fuse in the bulb to stop the 5 amp lighting circuit fuse blowing when the bulb reached EOL. They were a little more expensive but so much better trying to to rewire a fuse in the dark is no fun. Did bulbs in the USA and Europe ever have Ballotini fuse,? PS if anyone wants more info on old UK plugs please ask

Why would the bulb trip the 5A circuit when it goes EOL?

A lot of lamps especially cheap imports trip the breaker when EOL, some doing it violently & shattering the bulb.

5A lighting breaker ? How about 16A room and 32A main for the house tripped together from an EOL GLS lamp ?

To trip 32a that must have been vicious, I bet it went with a bang!

With a bang and big white flash, but did not explode. My home is in a place wired with fairly thick overhead along the road and thick cables in the supply drop and such, so the available short circuit current is high. The voltage is above nominal most of the time too

The candle bulb in our ele tric fire will always trip a 30 amp breaker when it goes EOL obviously the bulb has no internal fuse. In the past a bulb could never blow a 15 or 30 amp fuse but breakers are far too sensitive

What wattage is that bulb ? 25W anbd below are usually vacuum lamps, they should not have any explosive EOL..

At the moment it's a 40 watt bulb sometimes it's 25 watt just use whatever the shop has in stock

The only USA made lamps with that kind of fuse I've seen are 240v Duro-Tests. They are export lamps.
