I have noticed that viewing :hps: lamps through the blue diffusion coat on the top of windshields will make their light appear whiter. Would producing  :hps: lamps with blue glass or using refractors suck as the one pictured below work?

You could as well just remove the sodium and leave the mercury alone.....

Maybe there is something from the xenon too

I don't think that'll happen since they're banning Mercury vapor lamps. Plus it would be useful with the Mercury retrofits.

The blue light remaining is the light of a clear mercury lamp, from the mercury that is present in the HPS.... Possibly some of it comes from the xenon as wellThe filtering will just make it less efficient than the mercury lamp is in the 1st place....

If you want "mercury color" try to underpower a MH lamp, but beware that it may not like it (blackening arc tube etc)

I wouldn't mess with mh lamps since there's be a risk of explosion if something goes haywire.

Any high pressure lamp may explode, when something bad happens. It is true, for many MH's the regular wear was sufficient, but when thinking about e.g. ballast failure, any lamp may explode...

The HPS could reach blue part, when the arc is operating on high enough temperature (so current density), it is just the spectrum broadening reaching till the blue part. That way work the "white HPS" lamps...
But normally the HPS are not operated that high (it means lower efficacy, as the broadening happens towards IR as well and there it become part of losses)

The only discharge lamps I've heard of exploding are  :a_mh:   I've heard of the white son lamps and what you speak of Medved. Thanks.
