What's the most offensive/wrong lighting article you have seen? « on: September 14, 2015, 11:07:03 AM » Author: Lumex120
I don't remember where I saw it, but I once saw an article saying you can get mercury
poisoning from standing under  :mv: streetlights. I know that is wrong, and there is literally no way that could happen. >:( >:( >:( >:( :'( :'( :'( :'(
What is the worst article you have seen?

I've read that LEDs produce no noticeable heat. ::)

Getting poisoning from arsenic in LEDs is the mos asinine thing I ever heard. They're deeply buried in the grain of salt sized dies themselves and in trace amounts at that. You'd need to grind them to super fine dust to even get any arsenic in you. (Finer than powdered sugar.)

Why I like LEDs on top of other lighting tech?
LEDs = Upgrade 95% of the applications. (That is if you avoid eBay's LEDs).

LED brainwash? No, people uses them cuz they work well for them.

In response to where you heard that: Oh really? Then how come my 100w green LED gets hot enough to melt plastic, even with an ice cube directly on the back of it? And that's not even at half the power. ;D

That is true depending on where you are located VS the LED. Incandescents emit most of their heat as IR, HID emit some of it as IR, but LED and Fluorescent indeed put out nearly no IR - All the heat is ending up on the lamp itself

So if you are standing in the beam of light - Indeed no noticable heat

But if you are touching the lamp.....

The LEDs of the indirect fixtures at our resort room at Ein-Gev resort village, vaporised water on my finger in seconds and was very hot to touch.

"WARNING: energy-saving bulbs contain mercury
In addition to the danger of radiation of energy-saving bulbs - now warns US Environmental Protection Agency that liquid mercury which can cause respiratory problems. Recommendations: When one bulb breaks, has quickly leave the room for at least 15 minutes"
???
"Energy saving bulbs contain mercury". As if everyone doesn't know that. :P
Radiation? CFL's arent nuclear powered. ::)
Mercury can't cause respiratory problems. It can cause health issues (if one to 5 CFLs break, you should just be worried about the glass, not the mercury. Anything higher than that, you should air out the room for at least 15 minutes, ideally with a fan.), but respiratory problems would be from smoke or dust, not liquid mercury. Leaving the room and not doing anything isn't going to solve the problem. The mercury won't go anywhere. :P ::)
