antique street lights « on: December 17, 2015, 12:03:38 AM » Author: mpsatellite
Hi! I am currently restoring a late 1950's-early 60's westinghouse street light but when I purchased it at the scrap yard the shade  was missing. it is a mercury vapour unit and the shade it takes is completely round (not teardrop shaped) I was wondering if anyone out there had an extra one or might know where I can locate one. (I tried ebay but did'nt have any luck  :-[) any help would be greatly appreciated! :)thank you very much!

Do you have a picture of it? If it's completely round at the top, then it's a NEMA bucket most likely.

actually I think I could be wrong it might be a high pressure sodium lamp. (i'm not sure) I think you're right it may well be a bucket refractor type I know for sure it is a westinghouse brand (stamped on it) I saw a diagram of a westinghouse (patent 1971) fixture and it's identical to it. I took a few pictures with a digital camera but I'm not sure how to post them online. once I figure it out i'll post some. oh and also, the shade is held in by a hinged ring attached to the head of the fixture that has a latch that snaps closed. the shade is missing have any idea where I can find a shade for it? I'm also not sure if the shade was glass or plastic ??? any information you can provide me would be appreciated! thanks!

Yep it's a NEMA bucket. Any readable info on the ballast? Also, if there's a circuit board thing hanging around in the fixture that means it's HPS.

no unfortunatly the sticker(s) on the fixture are all worn off. inside the head (above the bulb socket plate) there is what looks to be a large capacitor and a ballast (coil?) but I don't see any circuit board. the socket is a standard household base. what do you think it could be and where could I find a shade? :-\

could it be a mercury vapour? or a HPS? I really don't know how to tell. :(

It mite be HPS if it has the metal thing. NEMA heads don't have caps unless they're remotely mounted.

Maybe eBay if your lucky. I found these , and you might be able to transplant the lens onto your reflector since the one it comes with has no latches. Also, the lite would've been MV originally, so the heathens that owned it before must've converted it. ::)
