Virtually everything on this fixture is aluminum, remove the lense and the ballast,the fixture approximately weighs 40 pounds. The dome top is huge! Brand new in 1964.

There are some of these near the Community center in Duluth MN. They are HPS, but otherwise the same. I have a pic of them somewhere.

These are mildly interesting, especially in 700w great find.

In all my years of playing with lights I've never seen a 700 watt Merc, when we converted the fixtures in 2011 some fixtures had 400 mercs in them and one had a 1000 merc. I guess the 700 watt bulb is of the same size as the 1000, the reflector and Lense can easily accept that size.

I cant' imagine the 400w bulbs were healthy for the ballasts. The 1000w lamps would have been fine, however. Do you still have the ballasts?

I heard you could use 700 watt bulbs on 1000 watt ballasts but I'd imagine the bulb wouldn't last as long and you'd put more stress on the ballast. I heard that GE used to use the same ballasts for 700 and 1000 watt bulbs, but all you have to do is chage the cap value. Those who have a good ol m1000 ballast could check and see.

These fixtures also are used at the Edmonton International Airport.  They invert the arms and the lense is directly over the ballast housing. Also used there are double arm/ head configurations.

Ballasts are long been disposed,  2 long capacitors were part of the original components.

There's a few of those around down in Milwaukie, OR still in operation to this day. They are mercury vapor If I'm ever in the area I'll snap a picture.  The POCO is swapping out all MV and HPS lamps to LED. Hopefully they'll let me get my hands on them if they ever convert.

If you can get one when they are taking them down, make sure you get the tapered collar that's at the bottom of the ballast can. It has 4 sleeves and a spring around it. That tightens around the pole fastening the fixture to the pole. I can include a picture if you want.

These are interesting... are any of these still around?

Yes, the airport in Edmonton still has some in operation,  they have been converted to 400 hps back on the mis 1980's. I saw 2 of them at a restaurant in Kamloops B.C. just last year. It's nice to see these architectural fixtures that probably were very expensive back in the day, still in use.

We actually have some of these here... at a bank, however they're held up by a single arm rather than two and they have what kinda looks like cobrahead refractors...
