Windows 10 « on: June 30, 2016, 12:20:57 AM » Author: icefoglights
Well, today I finally pulled the trigger and let my laptop update to Windows 10.  I had been messing with Windows 10 for about 6 months before it's release on my desktop, but my laptop was my main machine, and when I bought it, having Windows 7 (at the time when almost everything new had Windows 8) was one of it's many selling features.

With a month left in the free upgrade offer, I decided today to go ahead and do it.  It's not like I can't go back to 7 if I'm not happy with it, and I'll at least have a license for Windows 10 available for this machine.  For the most part, the update whet smoothly, with only a couple of drivers that needed further updating after.  One thing I discovered is that my machine didn't boot up any faster with fast start enabled, but it shut down a lot faster with it disabled.  Still have more to check out...

I won't get close to Windows 10. It is a big one spyware. You can't control the updates like in Windows 7 and earlier, and you can't remove the AERO shell and prevent combination of the buttons in the taskbar in order to have text in them in addition to symbols. Edge suffering from labor pains, and the interface is much harder to use.

I'm not sure if I'm going to keep it on here.  It's running kind of rough.  On my desktop, the in-place upgrade had a lot of issues, while a clean install ran smoothly, and I'm seeing some of the same issues here.  One thing I'm having to do is go through and change some of the default programs, like the photo viewer, from the stripped down "universal" style apps to the more useful 7-style programs.  I didn't use Internet Explorer.  I don't use Edge either.

Although there is no "windows classic" theme, it is possible to turn off the transparency effects.  Also, in the task bar options, the buttons can be set to combine and hide labels, only combine (and hide labels) when the task bar is full, or never combine and show labels.  There are also good methods for dealing with the privacy issues, which are worth looking into even in earlier versions of Windows.

The updates thing I have mixed feelings on.  The idea of having the installation of critical security updates mandatory and automatic is a good one.  The part I don't like is that they got rid of the update categories, so all updates are treated the way critical security updates should be.

I've messed with it a little, but could never really get into Linux.

Decided to go back to Windows 7, but my computer is fighting me every step of the way.  I was going to go with a nice clean fresh install.  First issue ended up being nothing would work that required accessing Windows Update.  Downloaded the servicing stack update, SP1 convenience rollup, and July 2016 update rollup.  That fixed the initial issue, and cut the Windows Update list down from 200+ to less than 100.  Ran into a few issues caused by subsequent updates, and had to update some drivers.  One thing that caused problems with that is a less than ideal internet connection.  Got things working smoothly, so I decided to download and reinstall MS Office 2013 Pro Plus.  Let it run all night to download it, but in the morning when I went to activate it, I discovered that I couldn't access the activation code because the contract it was purchased under had expired (Microsoft HUP).  Plan B, restore from a backup image I had made back in March.  Plug in my external hard drive and got into recovery mode, but there are no drivers in recovery mode for the hard drive where my backup image is stored  ??? >:(

Hard to believe there are no drivers for a hard drive, allthough who knows.. Most likely the missing driver is for the USB host controller into which the drive is plugged

Use a bootable archive tool like Acronis and make a backup of clean installed system after the drivers/updates/sotware were all installed

Yeah I walked away from it and had a realization that's pretty much where you went.  It was the USB 3 controller that it didn't have drivers for.  Plugged the external hard drive into one of the USB 2 ports and I after a long wait I was able to restore from my back up.

Wow, I frankly had no idea such a thing as Windows 10 existed until you mentioned it to me awhile back when we were trying to coordinate to get together.  It's amazing how ignorant you get when you've been surrounded by nothing but Mac. Although as of now my university is more or less PC, but I still use my own Mac for everything. But the library computers, writing center computers, math lab computers, etc. are PCs, which I mainly only use for printing documents I emailed to myself.  I would like to get literate in Windows though.

Pardon my ignorance, but did a Windows 9 ever exist, or did they go right to 10?

Microsoft went from Windows 7 to Windows 8, than Windows 8.1 than Windows 10.

There's a couple of stories on why they skipped 9.  First off, Microsoft's naming scheme for versions of Windows isn't exactly linear or consistent.  They went from 1, to 2, to /286 and /386, to 3x and NT 3x, than 95 and NT 4, than 98 and 2000, than ME, than XP, than Vista, than 7, than 8, than 8.1 and now 10.  It was said that 10 was such a big jump from 8, that they decided to skip 9.  A more plausible reason I've read is that it's to avoid confusion with the 9x series (95, 98 and ME).

I think it is more the jump, but not in technology as much but with the concept of pulling everythign into the cloud with 10. Microsoft (and who not, including the average user, whose understanding of security is limited but wants the convenience) all want to move everything to the cloud as soon as possible. So the marketing of this version as a brand new, "perfect" product with "perfect" version number is a big marketing advantage

Zero interest in that spyware-infested thing known as windows 10.

I'll stick with WFW3.11/98se/XP/7 (version depending which computer you're talking about  )

Oh and when MS was giving out the free Win-10 spyware infection, I never got any of those annoying popups :)
(due to computer settings, and all MS stuff I know about being network blocked)

I'm running a tri-operating system- Windows Vista, 7, & 10, all 64 bit.  Windows Vista is for a few programs that won't run well on 7 or 10 even in compatibility mode.  Never an issue with any of the windows products, and I do run various spyware detection and all that crap.
