We loved watching them, one of the best bits were the very corny segues by Tony Hirst, most groan worthy.  ::)

Absolutely, we firmly believe he was responsible for inciting everyone else with a microphone to do the same  ::)

We did love the programmes though, did they ever do one about making SOX lamps, I wonder..?  :a_sox:

Now that I'd like to see, does anyone know if it's on Youtube or somewhere..? The search facility on that is abysmal and always returns hundreds of results that are [censored] all to do with what I asked for  >:(

I would as well.

I don't know where to find it... I say that episode a long long time ago, I believe they refereed to them as HID bulbs, and did not specify what kind they were but recalling from memory they appeared to have the structure of a Mercury lamp... I believe they even coated them...

Never even knew about it til one time seeing a link to a YouTube vid for one ep.

Was it something that was actually on broadcast TV, or was it cable-only (if the latter that would explain my not knowing about it...)

How It's Made would have been broadcast on terrestrial TV, it certainly was here.

I used to watch it around 10 years ago. It was on Discovery here which was a cable only channel. They did quite a few lighting related ones, including off the top of my head: fluorescent lamps, SBMV reflector lamps (referred to a HID bulbs on the show), and incandescent lamps.

A lot of those are on Youtube, there's a bunch of links to lighting related ones here.

They called the mercury lamp episode "high intensity light bulbs" and they showed how self-ballasted mercury lamps are made. rather cool! they still show old episodes on the science channel here.
