Ya you need a huge Inductor ballast, with a Huge Igniter. These lamps need anywhere from 50,000 to 70,000 Volts to ignite it.They work at amazing 70 Atmosphere, and the arc temp can range at up to 10,000°C, or 18,032F

Dangerous for sure! These lamps have much higher pressure than a HPS lamp (I think)...

What about the mercury ones of the similar shape. Are those dangerous when off? Theyre called HBO lamps. (Not the channel.)

Why I like LEDs on top of other lighting tech?
LEDs = Upgrade 95% of the applications. (That is if you avoid eBay's LEDs).

LED brainwash? No, people uses them cuz they work well for them.

Depends of the pressure of the lamp: Higher=more exploding, that's simple  ;)

both xenon and xenon-mercury short arc lamps are dangerous, they both have gasses under high pressures(5 atmospheres when switched off,90 atmospheres when powered.)of course the mercury-xenon lamp contains mercury so that technically makes it more dangerous, but on the bright side the mercury raises the luminous efficency.

HBO do not contain Under pressure Gas when off, how ever they do create about 70 to 80 Atmospheres of Mercury Pressure so don't bump it when its on, how ever XBO lamps need Xenon under pressure to create is lights. Keep in mind HBO only contain Mercury at low pressure gas.

http://www.lamptech.co.uk/Spec%20Sheets/Osram%20HBO3500.htm  That should help you understand about the gas pressure in it a little better. :) The key factor in HBO lamps is not always visible lights, its the UV they alot of people are looking for Lab tech equipment. Buy the way (Form109) There is no Xenon-mercury short arc, HBO lamps only contains Argon and mercury at low pressure at room temperature when stable. The mercury Vapor pressure condenses back in to its original equilibrium state of energy to a stable room temperature to a solid.

then explain how a xenon short arc lamp can explode when powered off, there is still some pressure present even when powered off.

Yes theres always Pressure in Xenon short arc (XBO) but HBO are little different. The pressure changes due to Temperature as to alot of matter does. :)
