I have a few burnt out incandescents which I want to convert to arc lamps. Are there others ways to start a such lamp except the neon transformer? I heard that a microwave oven transformer will do the job too...

i've posted on a similar subject, because a mot or microwave oven transformer is not ballasted it will likely trip your circuit breakers, the output current is high too, when i tried it it melted the filament all the way to the lead wires, and blackenend,a neon sign transformer is better safety wise because its current limited the highte voltage(7,000-15,000) probably has a better chance of striking an arc, either way be careful.

Just remember, MOTs give off more AMPS then volts, WAY more then enough to fry you! so whatever you do, try NOT to use one!! I don't want members getting electrocuted!  :'(

i use mots they are dangerous when handled improperly, and they will fry you, they also overheat easily, and might trip your circuit breakers if you use them for more than 30 seconds, your better off using safer alternatives such as flybacks, and neon sign transformers.

Rudy: Don't worry MOTs will stay away of me!
