F30T8 doesn't light on F30T12 ballast « on: March 08, 2019, 05:30:48 PM » Author: HomeBrewLamps
Is this because the tube is incompatible or because the tubes dead?

I plugged it into a 3 foot strip light meant for T12 because it's all I have... It doesn't glow at the ends or flicker... But I took it into a dark room and when I touched the end it did glow near the cathode does that mean it still has vacuum and its just not able to light on incompatible gear?

Yes, F30T12 rapid start ballasts will have difficulty lighting an F30T8.  I haven't tested this combination, but maybe if it's grounded and you run your finger along the tube, perhaps it'll light.  Do you have a plasma globe?  Those will usually do the trick.

Maybe if you wire in a starter loop with a glow starter you can get it to strike.

I think that the T8 diameter, increases the lamp ignition voltage somewhat. However, since both lamps contains argon, I think you can aid the starting of your lamp on the rapid start with the use of a plasma ball.

Those F30T8 tubes are preheat tubes with different
cathode designs.  while T12 have lower heating voltsge
for chathode to warm the tubes up

No LED gadgets, spins too slowly.  Gotta  love preheat and MV. let the lights keep my meter spinning.

could I light it on a ballast meant for 22 watt circline or a F20T12 choke?  or maybe the preheat choke used for an F18T8 aquarium bulb? is there any HID ballast i could use? I do have a 50 Watt HPS choke laying somewhere... i do not have a proper ballast for this lamp yet, but i really wanna run it on a temporary set up (for now)

if i figured out a way to p[reheat the cathodes with it connected to the F30T12 ballast would it be able to light properly?

F20T12 ballasts won’t work because this lamp requires an OCV of 220V. You should be able to get it to light using a standard RS magnetic F40 ballast (single lamp) but by wiring a starter loop.

I did as you said and it works perfectly! Thanks!

The ballast is also dual rated for F30 lamps so I think it'll be just fine!

I’m glad it worked !

Do you think it may be underdriven or over driven this way?

If the ballast is rated for 40 w lamps only then the lamp will be overdriven. If the ballast is rated for both 30 and 40 w lamps then it would be slightly overdriven because the ballast is a compromise for both wattages.

Oh, now that I think about it, the T8 versus T12 difference will come into play, too. Others with more knowledge will be able to explain this. In any case, monitor the ballast temperature to make sure that it doesn’t overheat.

我遇到的也是相同的情况,按照快速启动的电路接线,灯管没有任何反应;但是连接启辉器改成预热启动时,会启动了,但是会出现启动失败的情况。。

What is the open circuit voltage of your ballast? If it is too low for both lamps, the lamps won't be able to maintain a discharge.

镇流器的开路电压是多少? 如果两个灯都太低,灯将无法保持放电。
