What would happen both in the long term and short term if you ran a HID lamp on a neon sign transformer? I have a few 3000 Volt NSTs and I've been tinkering around with HID lamps on them... The 175watt mercury lamps look pretty cool running so dim.. 1000 watt high Pressure Sodium aswell.

Running an HID on a NST,  is like running them on an ignitor, so they would only exhibit a HV cold cathode discharge. This can ruin them fast.

Good to know,

I guess I will not run HID lamps on NSTs.

Running in cold cathode mode will sputter the cathodes and blacken the arctube. But it can't be fast with 30mA ish of current.. I think trying to light it for a few seconds or 10's seconds won't do anything noticable to the lamp

If you have a leaked / broken arctube lamp then it is great for such test. Bet the discharge will look beautiful
