ballast from abrams lighting fixture « on: November 02, 2019, 11:59:38 PM » Author: Walter Knox
i found this fixture in an old barn about a year ago, it is preheat and runs 2 f40t12 bulbs, i have been using it every day (about 7 hours a day) for a year and took it apart today to fix the tombstone, the ballast does not buzz too muchand does not appear to be leaking a lot of tar, there is a tiny bit around the wire hole, but i have seen worse. the ballast was pretty hot it was too hot in one place to touch. it does not seem to have any issues though. i am running 2 altos (i know they are crap but it was all i could dig up at the time) do they make it run hot?.
anyway, the sticker on the ballast is gone, but it has a stamp that just says "32" i don't think it is that old, i dont even know if they had them then. there are 2 stickers on the fixture that have the number 48 on them, could that be a date? is anyone familiar with Abrams lighting? i cant find anything under them so i am assuming this is a small company.

Since the company address doesn't have a zip code It's at least pre-'63 (U.S. started using zip codes 7/1/1963)

It should be okay. I’ve got a modern Valmont preheat ballast that gets too hot to touch after running for a while.

Part of the problem might be that the light is mounted directly to the ceiling, so it is harder for the heat to dissipate. It would probably help to hang the fixture by some chains, or to at least provide some sort of standoff from the ceiling to allow airflow around the top of the fixture.

it had a number stamped in it in white ink almost exactly like the font of the stamp on that one, i believe it was a 27.
