San Diego area freeways « on: November 05, 2019, 04:33:45 AM » Author: yuandrew
This past weekend, I took a trip down to San Diego to attend my Cousin's wedding. The San Diego area freeways once had the most extensive installation of Low Pressure Sodium fixtures, most of them being the SRP series by Philips/Norelco and later Amercian Electric.

In the past year, LED fixtures have since replaced the majority of the Low Pressure Sodium lights. On this particular trip which took me on the Interstate 15, the 163, and a small portion of the 52, I only spotted 9 or 10 such fixtures. My trip back home on the I-15 later in the evening revealed only three working fixtures

Express Lane Entrance, Southbound I-15 before Rancho Bernardo Road exit [not working]

(2-headed) I-15 Express Lane Median, south of Carmel Mountain Road [not working]

(2) Northbound I-15, Poway Road Onramp [only the further one works]

Northbound I-15, Mecy Road/Scripps Poway Parkway Exit [works]

[I recalled seeing a third working one on the I-15 but I don't remember where it was located]

The Northbound side of the CA-163 also has three classic :mv: Mercury Vapor GE cobraheads with glare shields; a fixture style that was once ubiquitous on many Southern California freeways.

They probably will. There's still a lot of HPS lights still in use in this area and quite a few are out. There was also another LPS light on the 163 but it was out. I also spotted a set of three working MV underpass lights! :mv: They have coated lamps. I believe there is six on each side.

On a side note, there's still lots of LPS in San Diego, Murrieta, and the other areas surrounding them! :a_sox:

Update: Was in the area recently and the lights in the first two links are now gone. They were replaced by Solarmax LED street lights.

Another update: The Norelco SRP that was on the exit for Mecy Rd/Scripps Poway Pkwy stopped working, and then was replaced by a SolarMax SMX. Also, the M-400 on the Sixth St on-ramp was replaced by a SolarMax SMX. And finally, the M-400 that was on the on-ramp for Washington St was replaced by an AEL Series ATB2.

Interesting that they used an ATB2. I thought they used only ATB0s by now. If I recall correctly, CalTrans used the ATB2s for a short time between 2013 to 2014. Only seen a few of them, but they held up well.

EDIT: I saw the most recent streetview, it was replaced by an older Solarmax SMX, not an ATB2.

Oh, okay. I didn't remember which pole the old luminaire was on, so I assumed the closest one was replaced by an ATB2.

Another update: The two SRP's on the Poway Rd on-ramp and the SRP on CA-163 near I-805 were replaced by older SolarMax SMX's.
