M250R2s don’t last very long « on: December 24, 2019, 09:32:54 PM » Author: M250R201SA
About 75% of the M250R2s installed after 2012 have bit the dust in my town.  Mostly ignitors have gone bad, but a lot of them have bad capacitors!  What gives??

Actually, the ones I’ve seen were assembled in Henderson, but the capacitors were made in Japan, and I’m sure the ignitors were “Made In China”

It’s more to do with the LED takeover, the same thing happened here with lamp quality, LPS is a prime example.
Once it’s clear less and less people are using HID, the manufacturers can see the writing on the wall, and less effort goes into the quality of the, (soon to be extinct), product!, and for those who may not have realised it yet, HPS  and Halide will be next!

I got rid of my M250R2 and just have M250R1 and a couple of 201SAs.  Once I saw all the M250R2s going bad after just a few years of service (a couple of them in town didn’t even make it 2 years), I decided to sell it (while I still could, since eventually it will be harder to sell).  Nobody wants HID anymore.  I have one Mercury 250w NEMA, one 100w HPS NEMA (both GE 201SA) and my M250R1 250w HPS.  I also have a Leotek 100w equivalent GCJ and a 250w equivalent GCM.  The M250R1 was graciously rebuilt by Mike McCann.  And the quality looks 100x better than the M250R2s of today.

I was thinking of getting one of the 201SA NEMA kit from eBay because the prices are cheap now. But I'm not sure now since these are having issues. I already have an late 80s one that's MV. I might get an AEL 115 instead of the 201SA, they're cheaper anyway.

Collect vintage incandescent and fluorescent fixtures. Also like HID lighting and streetlights.
