I steer far, far away from politics, so I'll keep this short:
This is actually the second time I've heard Trump say this. First time was during some other live broadcast event lol

I firmly support consumer choice, not force by the government. I don’t care who or what party, etc. any politician is from or what their reason is. If they support consumer choice I will credit them for that. Nice article below,

Agreed 100%. That is one of the main reasons I detest L*D. I don't care if it's the best thing since sliced bread (which it most certainly isn't) I hate having things forced on me  >:( :curse:

Yes, we the people determine the future of lighting with our own wallets, not people who sit in high places. If a change in products is pertinent within society, we will make it happen naturally without the need from force or outside influence by how we spend our money. That way we not only take the right to determine our own future, we also take the responsibility for the future we choose. The government forcing the issue is an insult to their own constituents intelligence, to me it says to the constituents you’re not smart enough to make the “right” decision so we are going to make you do it. I’m happy that there are some in government that understand this.  :inc:

I'll keep this short as well: this is something that I've been concerned about for quite sometime, and I've brought it up from time to time on this site.
I've always wondered, ever since the production of LED became rampant several years ago... is it legitimately possible for LED's to
be forced upon us? And then at that point if we refuse to use LED's as our main source of lighting, what would they do?

I'm on the refusal side.

I think the most they could do is ban the sale/import/manufacture of all non-LED sources...
and ban the outdoor use of non-LED (plus indoor for public places)...
It would be pretty difficult to control what someone is using inside their home. (but for the general public, they'll just buy/use what is sold in stores, so get rid of everything but LED & you'll effectively 'force' most everyone to use it)

I could see either of these things happening to effectively "force" people to use LEDs.

1 - the government could enact legislation that effectively bans non LED sources. This can either be done in two ways, they could set a efficiency requirement that   effectively sets the minimum efficiency level that can only be achieved by LED and a small number of high performance fluorescent/HID systems.

2 - the government could ban the mfg/import/sale of mercury containing lamps which would be the death knell for most fluorescent and HID lamps.

A combination of 1 and 2 would effectively only allow LEDs, the now discontinued SOX and some mercury free HPS lamps to be sold.

Another likely scenario would be the manufacturers discontinuing lamps and associated gear for conventional lighting due to dwindling demand and profits with continuing to manufacture conventional lighting products. You already see this with companies like GE getting rid of all metal halide options for their outdoor luminaires, Philips discontinuing the production of SOX lamps, and the slow decline of fluorescent products. For example I believe due to lack of demand, almost all magnetic ballasts (these are the ones that weren't banned in 2010) have since been discontinued.

The most practical option to avoid using LED products going forward would be to probably stock up on conventional lighting products in the meantime while they're still being manufactured. Buying NOS products on eBay would also be an option too and might be preferred to buying new as it seems the quality on conventional lighting have slipped once the manufacturers started to focus more on their LED products.

@ joseph_125 - the problem is, certainly here, is that is exactly what they have done. They have effectively legislated that only L*D can be made and sold. All non L*D lamps are now practically gone from retail stores, apart from specialised things like oven lamps etc. As far as I know, now that Philips have ceased SOX production at Hamilton, there is no discharge lighting made in the UK at all, and probably no incandescent/halogen either  :(  They are still available on eBay, but those stocks aren't going to last forever  :(

As for people refusing to use L*D, that's never going to happen in sufficient numbers. The miniscule number of collectors such as us is nowhere near enough for governments to even recognise our existence, let alone reverse their decisions. The vast majority of the population have effectively been brainwashed into thinking L*D is the best thing since sliced bread, and they aren't going to change their minds any time soon.

I've started stocking up on incandescents, I think we have enough for a few years at least. Not a lot else we can do, sadly  :sadbulb:

Would he really call the Oval Office lighting "modern"? The often appalling colours in photos / video footage look as if the oh-so-representative indirect lighting comes from crappy 3000 K tubes...

The White House is more than likely completely LED right now. I never really thought about that. I wonder if President Trump knows?
I highly doubt those video footage cameras are fluorescent, HID, or incandescent at this point. I'd be surprised if they were

Wouldn't surprize me if that's the case...
But there's probably lots of nice vintage lights in there that should never have anything other than incandescent in them.
