Little bit of a hypothetical to tease your minds « on: December 13, 2020, 12:05:59 AM » Author: Bulbman256
Ok lets just say hypothetically that i got a metal halide lamp and ballast into zero gravity space and had the means of turning it on. So which burning position lamp would you use? :wndr: :emh:

Universal burn!!!!!

Well yes, but with no gravity the arc would just take the form of whatever arctube, so any lamp even the u bent arctube horizontal lamps would work, :wndr:

Wouldn't the arc "spread out" kind of like how a candle flame does in zero gravity, and therefore not be able to concentrate enough to vaporize the halide salts?

Wait, I just got the joke lol

Actually, SOX bulbs play baseball since they are part of the Boston Red SOX and Chicago White SOX.

Not really. The arc tends to become straight, so if the arctube is in the way, the arc will be "licking" it. And that means local overheating.

And generally: If you would opreate a lamp designed for Earth surface in a no/suppressed gravity environment, it will most likely overheat. Because the convection cooling, most designs rely on, works only in gravity.

Here is a hilarious sarcastic question:

How much energy would you save if you replaced all the incandescent lighting in your house with magnetically ballasted 4 lamp F40T12 rapid start 2x4 troffers such as these:
