HID, LPS, and preheat fluorescents forever!!!!!!
|
Has anyone on LG ever envisioned a lighting system that does not exist in real life?
For example, I have envisioned a so-called ‘EHO’ or ‘extreme high output’ fluorescent tube that is intended to run on a 400w mercury vapor ballast using a special starter in a preheat configuration and would be intended for use in high bay fixtures and street lights. In addition, my EHO tubes would either be linear or U-bent.
In addition, I have also imagined 310w u-bend low pressure sodium lamps that resemble SLI/H lamps, but shaped like u-bend fluorescent tubes seen in troffers. In my fictional world, my 310w u-bend low pressure sodium lamps would run on 400w mercury vapor ballasts in a preheat configuration using a special glowstarter. In my fictional world, 310w u bend low pressure sodium lamps would be used for high bay lighting and street lighting.
Finally, I have also envisioned linear low pressure mercury vapor lamps resembling clear fluorescent tubes used for street lighting and high bay lighting.

Not quite the same, but sometime when I was 15, I had a form of mind lapse, and I was 100 % sure that a 16 foot fluorescent tube actually existed, I could have sworn I’d seen one in a shop as a kid! Thinking about it as I got older and wiser though, I realised it was only a single 8 foot batten on a very high ceiling, which made it look a lot longer!

When I was younger , I envisioned a very low wattage mercury vapor night light which would have the equivalent output of a 4w C7 bulb .

Just picture a 1/2"long by 1/8" wide arc tube inside a C7 bulb !! They could have even made them in both clear and coated versions !

I'm just trying to imagine how small the droplet of mercury would be! I guess the manufacturer would have to use a small syringe to apply it. Still it's something that I definitely would have bought if they were real.

Admittedly I did imagine an HID lamp that burned with a totally pure, intense white light that didn't rank on the color temperature scale or the CRI scale. I think I got the idea when I read something about when potassium under the right conditions burns with a white hot flame. So I thought why not a high pressure potassium lamp. Hey it may sound silly but I was a very curious 14 year old in science class.

All lighting except LED rules!
|
I have imagined HID street lights using 2 or 3 lamps instead of 1 in the past and a weird 1000 watt HID lamp that contained an HPS arc tube, an MH arc tube, and an MV arc tube that could work on any 1000 watt HID ballast as some sort of lamp for general lighting. I know, they make no sense but still, they are just weird.

Actually, HID fixtures that contain two lamps exist. Lamps with a PCA arc tube for HPS and a quartz arc tube for MH in one envelope also exist; those lamps are used for hydroponic purposes.

Yeah, the old "Hollywood Special" luminaires used in Los Angeles used 3 lamps. Originally they used 3x 700w /X MV lamps. Later on in their life, they got retrofitted to use 3x 400w MH instead.
I believe Iwasaki also made a combination HPS/MV lamp for the Japanese market. I believe only one arctube was designed to be lit at a time. The idea was to use the cooler MV during the summer and the warmer looking HPS during the winter.

I remember there was a picture of a mercury vapor/HPS combo fixture that ran both bulbs at the same time. It was supposed to improve color rendering for indoor applications if I remember correctly.

I love those 3 lamp Hollywood Blvd fixtures! Silverliner told me a lot about them. To me those fall under a possible new topic, if you could own any fixture what would it be.

Wide-Lite made a high-bay that ran 2 lamps , 1 400w HPS and 1 400w MH lamp : https://www.scribd.com/document/468247208/Wide-Lite-IL-Dual-Lamp-Series-Bulletin-1986
That is unusual! Why the 2 different sources??
