I don't know exactly but they run cooler than other HID because they are very efficient. James Hooker would know.

How about the 18,000w HMI lamp (Single-ended.)

Why I like LEDs on top of other lighting tech?
LEDs = Upgrade 95% of the applications. (That is if you avoid eBay's LEDs).

LED brainwash? No, people uses them cuz they work well for them.

With one of those no-contact thermometer. You don't have to touch anything to get a reading. Some of them have a built laser pointer.

I checked the temperature of my 55 Watt SOX lamp with a non-contact thermometer.
I ran the fixture for an hour.

  Outer glass: Base/electrode area 82C - 180F  End: 72C - 162F
  Arc tube: Cathode ends 95C - 203F  U bend: 83C - 181F

technically a low pressure sodium lamp is not a high intensity discharge lamp

1 a lps lamp opperates under low pressure.

2 a lps has a lower current glow discharge as apposed to hids which use higher current arc  discharges.

3 a lps lamp does not exibit the bright arc of a hid lamp and produces a soft glow similar to a flourescent lamp.
