I've recently taken up an interest in vandal resistant pedestrian underpass luminaires. I'm wondering about styles (recessed, surface mounted, corner mounted etc...), makes and models. Particularly in North America, Australia and New Zealand.

Good question  Here in the UK we can use different variety of lanterns. In Birmingham on street view, I've seen some Alpha 1s, Lumas and GEC Z9545s but in Coventry, some Urbis lanterns are used. Oh and if you mean by pedestrian, I was talking about the roads 

Yes, I was talking about pedestrian underpasses. I'd expect there to be dww, simonsigns, Portland traffic, designplan etc... in the UK. If you happen to have pictures of them, I'd really appreciate seeing them!

These particular fixtures are fluorescent, and have a rounded, opalised 'bubble' cover.

This one had a stolen car 'torched' inside in April 2024. It suffered extensive heat damage and has been closed since. The exterior and interior paint was peeling off and suffered charred. An electrical box 2+ metres away had all of the exterior paint turned black, a tree near the outlet of the underpass caught fire and had about half or its foliage burnt off. The Sylvania Sylproof Stainless fluorescent fixtures inside had turned completely black (rather than a shiny stainless steel), the fluorescent tubes inside had melted completely and dripped down to the floor. The road surface above where the car was torched was closed for many months, likely due to the asphalt being partially melted by the heat.

Recently repair work has been undertaken which has nearly been completed, The walls inside have been repainted and resealed, the concrete floor has been replaced, and new LED fixtures have been installed. The new fixtures are WE-EF vlr130 linear surface mounted lanterns with large metal cages installed around them along with metal conduit (which is the new standard for underpass luminaires in Canberra).

Did England ever had LPS fixtures that would light a pedestrian underpass?

AFAIK there were 2x18w SOX Bergo lanterns, along with REAL (60w IIRC) SLI/H surface mount lanterns. It looks like most of the current British underpass luminaires are mounted in the top corners of the underpasses, and have a triangular side profile to reduce the number of surfaces.

No lights in the ones near me.
But I have seen HPS or fluorescent fixtures in other areas.

Interesting, if you have, or know where I could find some pictures, I'd really appreciate seeing them.

Pretty sure the one in our town is still fluorescent?, not been through it for a while though?

Winnipeg Canada older setups would have Holophane tallpacks in cages running SON/HPS OR floro panel jobs recessed in the wall

Use to be there corner and niche lights from Alumag- Belmag, Siemens and Intercolux using 2x IRS 40W tubes. Now we are using DesignPlan Tuscan fixtures. They are really vandal proof as I can tell by my self because I did try to destroy a fixture in purpose with a baseball bat. The fixture won!

Interesting @Michael, Those Tuscans are really tough.

One has some 1970s era caged Holophane wallpackettes, 70w HPS. The newer underpasses are all LED but there's a few with HPS and MH.

Fluorescent wasn't that common here due to the cold and having to stock a special lamp type just for underpasses.
