Should I get this antique LPS Spectral Lamp? « on: June 16, 2025, 08:12:42 PM » Author: Multisubject
There is this electronics store near me that had a bunch of stuff, but they also have surplus used stuff that they put out a lot. Well, for as long as I can remember being there, there was an NA-1 low pressure sodium spectral lamp with its stand, ballast, housing, and dewar jacket and literally everything else you could need. James' website describes the particular lamp inside with great detail:
https://lamptech.co.uk/Spec%20Sheets/D%20SLP%20GE%20NA1.htm

Although it has been there for a while, I only recently actually took the cover off and looked at what was inside, and lo and behold it was an NA-1. Like much of the more valuable stuff there, it doesn't have a price tag, and they just call up the owner and come up with a price when someone gets it. I have gotten really great deals from those kinds of things just because they really don't expect a child to be interested in electronics like me. Anyway, how valuable/rare are these things? Should I get it? If I don't end up getting it I will disclose its location so maybe one of you nearby can get it, but there aren't a whole lot of members near me.

Depends on what you want with it. It has a rated life of 500 hours so if your plan is to actually use the thing for accent lighting, it's not a good choice.

If it's a full scientific setup, you may be paying the premium that you get when dealing with that stuff.

Definitely. It is a historical lamp now and so has a high value to discharge lamp enthusiasts! Go get it without ever thinking if the price is not prohibitive. Having a right ballast even increases the value (not necessary the monetary, but as a highly collectable object).

Well alright, the general consensus is definitely that I should try and get it.

@Laurens
I will definitely not be using an LPS lamp for accent lighting lol! It is a pretty sturdy looking thing that looks suitable for a quality lab application, but it looks a little dinged up so hopefully I can get a good price. I am hoping that they will think it is just some sort of antique laboratory garbage and give me a good price, but they might be too smart for that.
