What is your dream Christmas light setup? « on: November 16, 2025, 12:11:47 AM » Author: WorldwideHIDCollectorUSA
Since the Christmas season is coming up pretty soon, I have been toying with the idea of having a very elaborate Christmas light display at my dream house.

The setup includes the following:

Christmas tree forest in the front yard with incandescent C9 strings of different color patterns on each tree in the forest. Some trees would use incandescent lamps, other trees would use LED retrofit lamps like the Wintergreen OptiCore lamps. Each tree would also have ornaments throughout the branches

Walkways lined with incandescent C9 strings fitted with stakes with some walkways having different color patterns. Some would use incandescent lamps and others would use LED retrofit lamps.

Roof and windows lined with incandescent C9 strings having different color patterns with some windows using incandescent lamps and others using LED retrofit lamps.

Inside the house would have multiple Christmas trees with LED retrofitted incandescent C9 strings.

My tastes may change over time depending on what I am in the mood for.

If you have a dream Christmas light setup, share your ideas here.

I don’t have one now 😬, years ago me and my neighbour across the street, Mick, tried to out do each other each year 🤣, he eventually beat me though with a full decorated tree on top of his porch! 🥳
Over the years though each one of my outside decorations failed and decent ones were no longer available where we use to get them from!
It came to a head last year when my giant Christmas candle with moving flame effect half went out, I took it all down in January this year and promptly disconnected the entire feeds going to them all!

The 3 remaining working ones we now have up inside the house, I don’t bother with anything outside anymore sadly 🙁

If I ever have a house, I just want to do a simple setup. Probably some colored lights out front and a few spiral lighted trees, and electric candles in the windows.

Collect vintage incandescent and fluorescent fixtures. Also like HID lighting and streetlights.

On the outside, compurter-controlled ofcourse, but also to have 100% RGB LED's (in some mini-ish size) ... but not the low-voltage ones like you can get now, instead ones that run on standard 120v (the low voltage ones are cool in that you can control every 'bulb' independently, but then you also have to deal with a bunch of 12v power-supplies, limited distances, limiting current(due to running off power supplies), very expensive controllers, etc. 120v on the other hand its simpler controllers, no power supplies, no distance limits, limiting current isn't much of an issue, but also means the whole string will have to change together which I'd be totally fine with.)

I do currently computer-control things (so have that part down), but its all standard mini-type lights (mostly LED), with multiple single-colored strings ran together to give different colors...so end up with a small bundle of strings outlining the house. A single RGB string would be so much cleaner/easier! .lol. but what I want doesn't exist(even the type of LED needed is non-existant)

-----------
Inside, I already have my little of 'forest' of trees (mostly LED, individual color per tree)...really wouldn't change much there other than adding more computer-control, and in particular one that could do dimming. (could easily be done, but I don't wish to spend the money & time it'd take to build controllers)

-----------
I have in the past really wanted to do dimmable fluorescents as part of the outside display (have used fluorescent in the past but couldn't control the dimming). I wouldn't bother anymore (even if I could build an interface to make 0-10v dimmable ballasts 'talk' to computer-controls) fluorescent is just too finicky - particularly about bitter cold weather. If it exists, 120v colored dimmable tubes would be far far better/easier.

-----------
Overall I don't do as much as I used to outside...fact is I'm old & worn out / just can't go climbing around in trees or as much on the roof as I used to. Making things easier/less time-consuming is better. :)
Oh and.. I actually have tons of sets of (used & new, mostly incandescent, but some LED too) mini lights that I'd like to just sell off because I'll never use them. (Yep even old XmasLightGuy wants to clear out a good part of his stuff!) If anyone here is in CO & needs lights, let me know. .lol.

I have a casual cozy style, with solar powered dim fairy lights on the smaller shrubs and plants, with the main tree having diffused colored incandescent/LED lighting. On the inside, purely warm white incandacent fairy lights.
I have a row of 6ft to 7ft palm trees bordering my garden, and I plan each will get its own solar fairy lights. The reason I like the solar lights is because they are very cheap and will work throughout the year.

My house has receptacles for Christmas lights up under the gable ends controlled by a timer.  My goal is to run colored icicle lights up and down the gable ends.  The roof of the covered porch would be framed with clear C9 bulbs.  Additionally, I'd love to wrap a spruce tree in colored C9s.

I currently have Celebrations Professional LED strings strung along the gable ends.  At the time I put them up, I could only find LED icicle strings in short lengths.  I finally found their Classic icicle strings in 20-foot lengths.  The weather hasn't been good for hanging outdoor Christmas lights, so it will probably have to wait until Summer to get done.  I did find a 50-foot string that uses actual C9 bulbs, and it came with clear LEDs.  I was able to get that hung up, and I'm really happy with how it turned out.  Only issue is the C9 string has a polarized plug while the pass-through outlet on the gable string is not polarized, so I had to use another extension cord to power the C9s.  I'll probably put in a dedicated outlet for them, possibly using them as patio lights in the off season.
