Yeah it was the space age then and everything was going modern.
Department stores were gutting out all that old 1940s look and putting in modern fixtures and all new lighting.
Modern fashion bars were the in thing.
A lot of stores wanted that modern image.
Many super markets were gutted out and the old fixtures were just piled up for scrap.
There was a Safeway store down the street that was modernized and there was a big pile of 40 watt preheat fixtures with bulbs in perfect condition, you could have all you wanted

It was not unusual to see piles of these behind stores next to the trash cans in the early 1960s.
Some still survived, in factories, warehouses and places like hardware stores.
