In my bedroom I have 4 colored lightbulbs they are 60 watts each and I put them on turn the music up and I got my own disco. The other day one bulb popped and I bought a new one on my way home I ran into my cousin who is into being Eco friendly and I got a real slating for using filament lamps. Am I being that bad surely if I want nice warm filament lamps then why shouldn't i

Just ignore such people.
I'm convinced, on those "eco" greenbrainers you can within just few minutes, find already a few aspects, where they are way worse to the environment than you...

So don't worry.

I have a friend that is like that (an eco nut). I usually tell him to buzz off (I usually use the other four letter word tho), I can use whatever lighting/bulbs in my house I want if you don't like it too bad it's my house and what I say goes.

You should go over to his place one day when he is not there and change out some of his "eco friendly" bulbs with regular incandescent ones, and go hide and watch his reaction when he turns the lights on.   ;D

One of the best freedoms we have and take for granted, is the freedom to chose for ourselves what we will do with our lives and what not.  Tell him thank you for being concerned, but you have your own preferences and using the eco friendly lighting doesn't satisfy you enough to justify getting em.

My cousin is really into LED lighting and says that its the future of lighting (also saying that it will replace ALL other light sources). I told him that we should have a choice of what type of lighting we should be entitled to have but he said "there's no choice..blah blah"

He also says that new things are better than the old things (well in the lighting world I disagree with this statement 92%)
Old things were made in the times where quality was really good.

So stick to your preheat fluoresant lights and incandescents, hannahs lights. Don't let an Eco nut/Greenbrainer tell you what to do.

Old lighting is the best (preheat fluoresants, Philips SL*s, incandescents, neon etc.)  8)

He thinks they're OK but he says the yellow colour is not proper for motorists and TBH I think he likes the white streetlighting a lot more (CMH and LED)

I tell you what he does not like about energy efficient lighting is the CFL retrofits because of the warmup (but the warmup is the awesome feature of the CFL) so mostly he has the Eco halogens (and CFLS for some of his lanterns)

SOX is much better for street lighting, the wave length of the light breaks through fog better than any other light source

ggillis, at this time of year where fog is now common. I have noticed that SOX does a perfect job of being clear in the fog and that one advantage that many councils are forgetting.

SON lighting  :hps: in the fog just diffuses the light as most of the light gets reflected in the humidity of the fog and that causes vision in the fog to get worse  :(

I think SOX is better around astronomic places too.  The mono chromatic light doesn't affect their telescopes, etc.

Just for a bigger perspective, though I do respect environmentally conscious approach to lighting, us lighting enthusiasts are a minority. If we choose less efficient or antiquated forms of lighting, that is really a drop in the bucket. Let the mainstream do as they wish but feel no "guilt" over your choice of lighting. One can argue that RC plane flyers are emitting unnecessary amounts of gases into the air with the two-cycle planes, or drag-racers are not eco-friendly, etc....the list goes on. A minority of our scale is seriously not going to make a difference. And as mentioned....leaving computers on 24/7....case closed.

I would have several cases of incandescent lamps on display at all times just to troll them, but then again I have no tolerance for such stupidity as it usually results in consequences ranging from costing people loads of money to getting people killed.  Or some combination of both.
You could also rub it in their faces when you end up feeding the local incandescent black market as it is only a matter of time until people end up seeing how bad these 'green' light sources tend to be and demand GLS lamps en masse.  Or better yet, get some fellow crazies (in a good way) and start your own lampworks.

Is your friend a CFLunatic or a carrier of LEDisease? I don't mind CFLs, as long as they don't blow up or burn the house down. LEDs are terrible and the only ones that last their rated life are indicator lights. The LED ceiling mount track lighting at my timeshare were terrible. The just sat there and flickered wildly. I also one where it had corroded and burnt up due to water leakaje.
