Honestly, I think it's good what GE is doing, but a daylight LED doesn't seem as good as say a daylight CFL, as the phosphor has been perfected for 6500K. I don't mind LEDs either, but I really don't know how well they will hold up in the long run. I've had a warm white CFL in my table lamp for 3 years now, and it just went EOL today! So not bad at all! I also have rough service incandescents in use around my house and those are excellent!

Personally, I say "Good Riddance!" to CFLs, despite being very much a CFL user, most of my screw-in sockets are fitted with them.
The only gripe I have is the "daylight" color of some CFLs is nicer than LEDs.

I plan to only buy screw-in LEDs from now on anyway, at least for the places I'd use CFLs.  But I'm going to use up my existing CFLs until they fail.

I've always thought CFLs had issues.  They got better to the average user, from a circline adapter or PL adapter down to a smaller-than-the-incandescent-it-replaces spiral, but they still had warmup issues, mercury, etc.

Mine have all lasted well though...even many of my CFLs are kinda "dated" now...but are "original" and haven't failed yet.  Most of mine are, ironically enough, GE!

I'm glad it's the free market deciding here though, not government "bans".  A company deciding a technology is outdated and no longer relevant sits better with me than a ban.

Ah, I just heard about this today and decided to come here to see if anyone reported on it. I personally like CFLs because, to date, they're the only standard light bulbs one can get in a 3500k or 4100k color temperature. Otherwise LEDs are indeed superior to CFLs in practically every way. I hope GE someday comes out with 3500k and 4100k LED Bright Stiks - I'd totally buy some. 25W and 40W equivalents would be great, too.

Where will Walmart get its generic bulbs?
I wouldn't be surprised if Walmart stopped carrying generic CFLs as a result of this. They could find another supplier, but it probably wouldn't be worth it since other manufacturers will likely follow GE in discontinuing CFLs.

Walmart sources their CFLs from TCP, not GE.

Oh ok. Thanks for the clarification, Trent. Does GE supply Walmart its generic fluorescent tubes (f40)?

I never really cared for CFLs that much anyway and I do not like LED lights either.

I'm really not a fan of CFLs anyway (the only nice thing is you can get 'Daylight' )
Not a LED fan either. (those 'filament' style LEDs are kinda cool though! .. I'd personally love to see one of them in daylight, although at the same time as being neat, it'd also look weird)

Overall I'd prefer to stick with "real lightbulbs" ... in other words incandescent :)

I picked up 1 box of these at Home Depot and I am quite pleased with them.  Also, I've been picking up 60 watt LED replacements from Home Depot, COSTCO, and ACE hardware, they are under $3.00 each with the heavy discounts being offered.  I am quite happy to retire most of my CFLs
I saw those GE things at Home Depot. Weird looking units. No interest in them.
The only screw-in LED bulb I own is one of the Utilitech's that Lowes had for $.99 on Black Friday

LEDs aren't bad at all. They are NOT a disease! I have a few in use at my house.

IMO those enclosed CFLs are garbage. I'd take LED any day over them.

I have a lot of LEDs in use in my house too. Several rows of them on every Ethernet switch. But they are not appropriate for most general lighting applications, while CFLs are
