I'm happy with LED in certain applications, it does have certain uses. I replaced the GU10 halogen downlights with LEDs to reduce heat buildup and lower energy costs and so far they seem to be working out well even though it appears to be a cheap brand. This house has a mixture of CFL and LED lighting in use as tungsten lamps (except halogen) are banned here.

Thats one good thing about GU10 LEDS that they reduce heat buildup, perfect for places/materials where there is a fire risk.

LEDS are best in cold applications such as fridges/freezers (where I often see dim flickering fluoresants that are non HO). One time recently I went to the local Waitress store in Reading and what I saw looked to be a Philips Master LED gone EOLED, but it turned out that the LED half was facing upwards rather than downwards ;D :D

The problem in many cases is not as much heat build up, but flammable dust build up. Common insulation materials like sheetrock dont really mind a 12V Halogen. But when there is a layer of dust building up on top of the sheetrock and Halogen spot, then the dust alone can act as the fuel....

Ands dont forget that often the transformers are hidden in the ceiling volume, and get covered with dust over time. They can be no less of a fire risk than the Haklogens, especially if something shorts out....

Incidentally - OR NOT - the few places around the house where instant full light is needed are the same places where it stays on for less than a minute or up to few minutes normally - Stairs Closets Toilets and so on. There Incandescents are the best solution anyway
