Another day and another dollar at work!

Clear top bulbs « on: March 01, 2008, 09:06:36 PM » Author: mercuryvaporisking
Who is making the highest quaility BT shaped MV bulbs these days that and made anywhere else but china? I only ask cause I purchased a phillips and while unscrewing it I drop it down on my couch, That little tiny soft impact caused the weld to break free from the arc tube! UNREAL! It's the second time I had a ED bulb break at the arc tube.

My experience?  BT are actually easier to break than the EDs!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The worst is the BT 400 watters!!!!! I have broken like THREE Westinghouse 400 watt BTs and one Philips 400 watt BT!!!!!!!

I think the newer rounded shaped BT actually are stronger because square shaped are easier to break...but squarish or smaller sized ones are better like square BT for 100 watt and 175 watters...

Wierd because for me the BT lamps are stronger inside and they don't break easily on me either.  Also, BT looks cooler and is easier to handle when installing/removing!

Sounds like an issue with lousy tube supporting with all newer lamps. That's the first thing I look for when acquiring a MV lamp. To me, arc-tube "straps" are necessary for proper support and added durability. The 100/175w GE, Sylvania, and Westinghouse all used metal straps at one time. The GE "ED" shape, and the Sylvania and Westy (and Philips for a short while) BT shape all had these. The GE ED bulbs used these through the 80's and I think sometime into the 90's. As lamps became imported, like Sylvania and GE...no longer U.S. made...they lost the straps. Philips was the first to lose the straps in the 80's after they wrecked Westinghouse. And way before that, in the 70's, Norelco lost the straps (owned by Philips....go figure). Any lamp can potentially break a weld, but the best thing to do is to look for NOS lamps with arc-tube strap supports!

Added: interestingly, the later Westy's/early Philips (very late 70's to mid 80's) had the actual wire frame wrapped around the arc-tube which is also very sturdy.

Yeah anything that can be handled alot. Seems them phils Lips LOL,  are designed to be screwed in one time and never touched again until relamp time. Someone told me they still make cleartop BT's? FIET electric make these? I missed a chance on ebay the other day to own 11 westinghouse BT from 83 for only $30. I don't know why I passed that up. And there was also 12 sylvania's BT from 82 same price again I passed that up. DAMN! I now regret it. I will keep an eye out cause I am tired of the poor quality. And I will never buy another phils lips product again unless maybe it be a philips ALTO HPS. They are the only good bulbs they put out.   :(

Don, Norelco were Philips the whole time....they weren't allowed to use the name "Philips" in the USA....so the name Norelco came up with this format

North American Philips Electrical Company

That's how the name was made

the ABCO owned Westinghouse still makes clearender BTs.....except they are more rounded but still GREAT stuff! Also Sylvania makes BT HPS and MHs......they make BT for all lamps 175 watt and above for MH......and BT HPS for 100 to 150 watts.....but there's no dimple for their 250 watt and up so they have the "BT style framing" on their HPS from 250 watt and up in Sylvania!

I wouldn't say they were GREAT stuff, remember a member had one of the fake W lamps explode on him and another member has been having short life issues with them.  I will say they are far better than the Chinese Philips mercs, but a far cry from the real Westinghouse stuff!

The new westy mercs tend to dim out after 4-5 years of service, still ok but no where as good as the old Lifeguards which lasted 20 years with plenty of light and were made in the USA.

The key thing is the real Westinghouse stuff most likely didn't explode as often, and I agree with Dave's post above.  The good news is getting 4-5years out of these fake Westy lamps, that's not bad at all for a Chinese lamp!

Before my 175w Chinese made Westinghouse ruptured, I recall seeing the arc-tube getting considerably blackened after one full year of usage. :P

How many cases of Faux-Westinghouse (man I like "Faux-Westinghouse" over "Fake-Westinghouse")...anyway let me start over.....

How many cases of Faux-Westinghouse MVs do you know of that exploded? Don's is the only one I actually know of!

I knew a few REAL Westinghouse lamps explode due to vibrations like under the train tracks or during storms or whatever.....

Any mercury lamp can explode, however it's very rare.  The simple point is the Faux-Westy aint a bad lamp for a Chinese one, but nowhere near as good as a Real-Westy!
