So the only probe start 175w mh bulb I had is now busted.. A little sad now... It still seems to warm up fully without the outer envelope which is weird, it takes some little longer but it does... Is this dangerous? Ugh my only bulb though.. And it was an older American one as well... Now any I get online will likely be cheapo Chinese bulbs  

Glad it did not explode when she knocked it over it broke the glass but the thing just flashed pink and kept going

I might also add that it is only 60 degrees outside and this thing refuses to dim, also I've been checking the arctube to make sure it's not swelling or doing any other dangerous things... Itsnot

And now my west lifeguard lamp is refusing to even turn on  , there's a bit of glass rolling around inside it, ugh not a good day, I swear I'm a put a lock on my door

The Sylvania was still in its case when all this crap took place so it works just fine, put it in light below, it flashes a little like a mh on warmup... Weird

List keeps getting bigger, the arctube on one of my 400w mh lamps is starting to buldge (been using it in the same fixture I put that Sylvania merc  in, and another thing related to the same fixture, the switch I used to short out the relay cool to over ride it and turn on the incandescent lamp as well as the mh/MV lamp decided to go up in smoke

I just removed it and capped the wires for it for now... This day has done a number on my eyes the smoke and gasses and whatnot make it feel like I dipped them in acid...

An unshielded MH/MV arc tube is NOT safe for human exposure due to the UV-C rays that are normally blocked by the glass envelope.

Ah fun, well I won't use it in here but I've been exposed to worse so i'll still keep the bulb, I need to find a new bulb for my fixture now  

It might not last very long like that, but it will for a while. Use in a lantern enclosed with hard Glass cover (like a cobrahead)

This thing will RD your eyes without a Glass cover, and it will RD any Plastics near it e.g. covers, wiring isolation, etc. Really only use it in something enclosed where it won't see anything except Glass and a Porcelain socket

If you touched the arctube clean it with Alcohol, same as with Halogen lamp

While you might of been exposed to worse, the thing with UV-C light is the damage may take years to show up and when it does it's usually in the form of cataracts or cancer, UV-C doesn't really kill cells it damages the DNA thymines so they are not able to reproduce or metabolise so they will eventually die but if the damage is not sufficient they may reproduce with errors and this leads all kinds of bad things, but something as simple as a piece of window glass/Plexiglas/polystyrene will stop UV-C from penetrating it and won't affect the light output.. To give you an idea of how effective it is at damaging the DNA in cells I have a tiny 5 watt Cold Cathode T3 U bend UV-C source in a quartz shield which will allow the UV-C to pass thorough it and this will make 1 liter of water from a source in the third world safe to drink in 90 seconds, if you chose to boil water it'll take 10 minutes at a hard rolling boil to treat every thing as effectively as this tiny UV-C source, and in reality the first 30 seconds are just to stabilize the tubes UV-C output so it's doing it's thing for only 1 minute at full power, And I know it works because every one else but me got sick on a trip.. (They to didn't listen to the warnings, about drinking the water, and even joked about how my UV-C light won't work) I'll post a few pictures up so you can see how tiny of a UV-C light source it really is, and your playing with way more watts then my 5 watt source..

Some people even sued school districts for allowing broken MH lamps to operate in their sports halls. I know the story of one teacher somewhere in the USA who was sitting under (or close to) one in a gymnasium for an entire day of meetings, and now cannot work and is on a permanent disability leave. A quick Google search for 'broken metal halide' will most likely turn up her story.

You might be able to source a replacement on eBay. I believe you're in the USA, so shipping shouldn't be astronomical.

My mother made good point, should save cash for stuff I'll actually need got plenty of lights, maybe this is sign to adapt, I will likely change the fixture to a different wattage or light source   s or something I dunno, but usually anything that breaks down in my possession, that I lack parts for, that I don't necessarily care that much about usually gets dismantled or repurposed, the only lights I've built that are not at risk of this is my hps desk lamp, which I've spent about half a year perfecting and my 1000w hps floodlight which came together quite nicely... Oh and my Nema bucket, other than those, Atleast in terms of lighting is subject to reuse/repurposement. I'll save the gear and use it in the future when I get a new bulb but for now it's getting stored... The light previously mentioned in one of my last replies with the faulty switch is at risk currently as well just because I don't like the way it is in general, it's kindof rickety and tempermental the 70w hps floodlight I built is also at risk, since it contains parts I could use to improve some other lights.

Also I might change my mind on the bulb, I don't necessarily care about its risk to me as I care about its risk to others therefore I might kill it completely... I'd maybe I'll take it outside warm it up all the way then toss a brick at it? Or maybe pour water on it? Or maybe I'll put it in the 1000w hps flood and pop it... Heh

there are plenty of 175W MH lamps out there ready to be purchased. 

They are, but I don't have the willingness, or need to buy a New bulb right now, as I touched on in my previous reply

It is now 175w MV I simply mounted a new head to it, the ballast seems to take a little longer to warm this guy up looks a little more like a street lamp also I had to turn it off to take that photo, whilst typing it had an interesting hot restrike episode, it flashed kinda like a fluorescent lamp, it scared me at first when it flashed, I had thought something went wrong, it sat there for 2 seconds after the original flash then it flashed again and 5 more times before fully coming up... That was neat to watch


Swapped the old reflector off the 70 flood for the one that was on the metal halide fixture, now it's a whole lot brighter
