rusty crusty vintage half piper salvaged « on: March 29, 2019, 01:06:13 PM » Author: Walter Knox
hi, i got this half piper fixture from a local historic house that is being restored. they gutted it and had a bunch of trash outside, in the pile was this rusty crusty half piper. i had to grind out the screws to get it apart and it is going to require a complete redo. i have already sanded it and painted it, but i am going to have to get all new screws 2 of the tombstones are shattered. i tried to apply power and it did not work. it came with 2 sylvania lifelign bulbs and 2 GE mainlighter bulbs which test to work. i cant tell if the ballasts are good at this point because all the starters were bad (the glass tubes were rattling around inside and not connected), i am going to try 4 new starters to see if i can get them to work, but if i cant i am going to put in 2 Westinghouse rapid start ballasts, but i would rather have the old preheat ones work. does anybody know who made this fixture, and how old it is or any other info on it?

Wow, that is rusty! I actually have an identical fixture - link here. With all that rust, the contacts in the starter sockets and lamp holders are probably quite corroded, but they should clean up with some abrasive and elbow grease. Also check that the wires coming out of the ballast aren't shorting to the casing - the insulation often gets quite brittle there. If the ballasts work, heat shrink tubing or liquid electrical tape will help keep the wires insulated near the casing, and new wires can spliced onto them. (I've opened ballasts and replaced wires that way, but that is a lot of work, and you need to be careful around the capacitor inside which often contains PCB oil.)
Overall, that fixture should look nice once you complete the restoration!

yeah, i checked with a multimeter and the ballast is at least not open or shorted. does yours have the same ballasts? if so do you have a picture of the wiring diagram on them? i still have not tested for functionality yet because i have not been able to get fs4 starters yet, i should have them tomorrow and i will see.

Mine has Todd ballasts seen here which look slightly different from yours, but should wire similarly. Wiring should be rather simple: line input on one side of the ballast should be black (hot) and white (neutral), and the other side should be lamp outputs possibly blue and red. One output wire goes to each lamp, connecting to one pin contact. On the opposite end of each tube, one pin usually connects to the line neutral, however I have seen some connect to the line hot. The starter wires connect to the remaining two pins on each end of each tube.
Sorry if I'm over-descriptive, since I don't know how much of the wiring you already know.
If you need more detail, just ask.

good news... the ballasts are both working good, not overheating and not buzzing overly loud.

i have got it completely done. i had to replace some sockets and the new ones are white, but the end caps hide them, so unless you are looking for them you would not know.

yes, i will. i have been gone for a week but i will post it, i should be home about 3 today. the colour i chose is not the original, but i think it looks good. also i use it all day from 6 in the morning to 9 at night it stays on. it is working great, not overheating or anything. but one thing i noticed is that it has started buzzing and although not alarmingly loud it is kind of annoying, but i guess there is nothing i can do and i will have to learn to live with it.

here are the pictures. sorry i have them in google drive link form, but if i shrink them down too much to fit they will bee to blurry. anyway, i tried to show asbestos i could. you can see i had to replace 2 tombstones on each side, they are white but with the end-caps in place it is not too bad. the good news is the tombstones with the starter sockets in them are all good.

That looks great. You really made a difference in that fixture! I like the old fans too.
