Getting tired of Apple Macs « on: February 06, 2019, 08:50:58 AM » Author: Flurofan96
Hey Flurofan96  here  ;)

Since of late 2018 my Apple MacBook Pro (mid 2015) that I got for my first year at uni back in August 2015, has been having an overheating issue ever since updating from the last HiSierra OS to the latest Mojave OS. I tried many methods such as uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome browser to switching to Firefox and closing many active applications as I could but to little to no luck. The worst thing about that is the battery's runtime is a lot shorter thanks to the overheating issue  :( >:( >:(

So as a result of that and of course due to an placement opportunity I have been granted for an IT Technician job, that requires me to watch and complete the online course videos/tests. I am slowly switching to Windows PCs/laptops for documents/internet browsing/photo storage etc. End of January I got myself a Fujitsu A532 laptop as it is designed for Windows 8/10 (came with 10) from ebay, second hand and it is great as it has an i5 Processer just like my MacBook pro did. I haven't forgotten about my Fujitsu P5925 which is gonna be my gaming PC once I get the processer upgrade just right

No one, not even Apple, shows the complete disregard to you as the system owner that Windows 8/10 does

Apple quality passed away with Steve Jobs  :-[

My first Macbook was dated 2007 lasted until 2015 with ram upgrade, hdd to ssd upgrade and, after all, battery was still lasting 1h and 30', polycarbonate case wasn't in good condition (frequent travel with trains to college, some flights).
Then, motherboard died, so i replaced it with a new macbook pro (maybe like your): big mistake: every update remove some functionality (guess what happened when Apple removed telnet and screen resolution settings over one update: i wasn't able to connect to some network equipment and to my gf's tv); now, i'm hoping 8GB of ram is future-proof, but i'm dubious with this; also wifi have some issues.
p.s. after less than a year, this laptop started to loose some pieces  :( and it runs hot.

I had thought about getting new iPhone, but thinking might stay with Android now. I use Windows PC, but we had Macintosh from 1994 that was still going after 20 years when my parents donate it.

Linux is the way.
Absolutely..! We both run Fedora on our main machines (Dell E6430 laptops) and it's brilliant  ;D

I do have another machine with Windoze 10 on (spit..) but unfortunately I need it for running some specialist software which won't run under Linux  :(

Only thing we need to do now is upgrade to SSD's as the old hard drives are getting to be a bit on the slow side  :-\

Linux is DEFINITELY the way.
Fairly easy to convert your Windows PC to dial boot Linux/Windows.

My wife surfs Chinese websites, and they are loaded with viruses and tricks and spurious scripts. Her laptop, with Windows, was just being mauled by the Chinese spyware, viruses, malware, etc. I installed Linux only (her Windows load was irrecoverable and we don't have a way to recover original OS because new laptops don't have restore discs, you gotta make your own, which we never did) about 3-4 years ago. She NEVER has an issue anymore, the Linux shrugs off the Chinese websites no prob. I guess all of the crap online is mostly aimed at Windows.

I have to use a Windows PC for my work though, it's a new Windows 10. I need Windows because my Cloud backup and engineering software only runs in either Windows or Mac. Actually, I am impressed with my new desktop PC with Windows 10. I bought a new, unused corporate HP ProDesk 600 and it is FAST. Boots fast from cold, doesn't get bogged down. It's the best *Windows* machine I have ever owned. BUT, I do know how Windows goes, it'll probably go to crap after a year as Windows machines generally do.

Years ago, before Jobs passed, a statement he made leaked out from a board room. His motto about Apple products was something along the line of "we make products that the average idiot can figure out". That statement made me never want to use Apple products again.

I use Linux exlusively since 2003 on my boxes, and since i maintain also the family (and some of the extended family) computers, i choose what to install on them - Which is also Linux unless they ask for Windows

In my current workplace (since 2017) i am an engineer, which means that there is IT that services my computer when needed. In previous workplaces i was the IT. But in all of them, it was the same story regarding to OS :

I was provided by the workplace with one desktop PC, that had Windows and whatever required applications for the job in their view (back then it was CRM and TeamViewer, nowadays its CAD and simulation software)

The first thing i did in each workplace was to go to the "IT dungeon" and get some old hardware to build myself a 2nd Linux PC, which is working side by side with the Windows one (no dual boot, i need them both working at the same time, and VM's just dont get it right for me)

Eventually, the more i have open headroom to choose what i do in my projects (many of them include developing custom software - I am not a software developer, but i do it to build tools to get my tasks done), my significant work (that extends past the provided applications) goes on the Linux box

It's not as much about the OS reliability (after all, back in the day i would use Windows XP computer without any antivirus installed, and never got any malware - just by not clicking where i shouldnt), its about the mindset

For example, right now i am working on automating some tasks in the company i work at. The one by far most common tool used for that in the industry is NI LabView - "Everyone" swears by it so it seems.... I look at using LabView as getting confined to one locked down product. In my view it (or any similar thing) can never compare to the power of writing my own code "bow and arrow" with a plain text editor (i use Kate) in Perl or C. I won't trade it for a world

Windows 10 i think is becoming better in its resistance to malware from the outside, with the built in protections and forced updates. But the malware which is Windows itself had become (with the telemetry and forced updates) is the reason why i can't recommend Windows at all to anyone anymore. Back in XP / Vista / 7 days, although i didn't use Windows for myself, i didn't see a particular reason why Windows is not ok for the average user, as long as he is not absolute idiot and the computer is well maintained. Now (and as Windows 7 support is going to end) there is very good reason

The problem with Windows 10 is it is so tightly integrated with Microsoft it's almost impossible to use it offline. It wants to connect to Microsoft's servers to do pretty much everything, and unless you dig deep into the guts of it it's difficult to stop it. Even then, there are some things you can't disable.

After 6 months of tinkering, I have finally got Win10 to resemble Win7 as much as possible, with the desktop and taskbar looking pretty much the same, and most of the other bits & pieces as close as I can get them, but there are still things that irritate me, such as forced updates. *I* should be able to choose if/when I do things to my machine, not Microsoft  >:(

The only reason I run it at all is that I have specialist software for programming 2-way radios that won't work under Linux, even using Wine or similar. Also my Garmin satnav needs to update its maps every so often, and the software for that is also Windows only  >:(

Day-to-day computing is all done on Fedora 30 (Cinnamon desktop). I've been using Fedora since version 10 and it's never failed me. After all, if it's good enough for Linus Torvalds, it's good enough for me  ;D

The only way I'd even consider Win-10 is if it was a 'offline only' computer .. or if/when I eventually get a good firewall setup that blocks 100% of attempts to connect to any Micro$oft server.

I have and use the last good macs before they started neutering them.

-2012 Maci mini
Core i5 2.5ghz, 16Gb DDR3 , 256GB SSD
Used with Asus 27inch 1080P monitor

Macbook pro 2012
Core i5 2.5Ghz, 8Gb DDR3, 256Gb SSD

No problems with these and they still work very well for my web browsing needs.

When I set up windows 10 on some systems I have, I turn off all the tracking, I set an offline account as normal. and I set up classic shell to bring back the normal start bar. I also put a utility in called Spybot Anti beacon which blocks the background connections to microsoft servers and immunizes the system every startup

If your operating system wishes to betray you there is plain nothing you can do about it

"Immunizes the system at every startup" seems much like the same thing that cracks (for activating unlicensed copies of Windows) do, they change some files before startup to "fix" the system. This is basically a cat and mouse game against the OS. The OS is smart, it is updated all the time to change positions, and eventually it will win. Either by resuming the data breach you try to avoid, or just by bricking itself completely on the very day you actually need the computer for something important

By all means, either use Windows 10 as is and accept all what it does, or throw it out and replace it completely with something you can use as is and properly trust
